Shadow® Chrome Black-Out Coating

Dupli-Color® Shadow® Chrome Black-Out Coating is a two-can system that creates the popular look of black chrome on polished metal or chrome surfaces for cars, trucks and motorcycles. The system includes a translucent, black base coat that casts a dark shadow effect. The clear top coat is for added gloss, depth, and protection from the elements. Shadow® is resistant to brake dust, road abrasion, chipping, and fading, making it ideal for chrome wheels, bumpers, interior/exterior trim, accessories, and under hood components.

All of these systems seem to look easy till you try them and then mixed results seem to occur. The following affiliate links take you to the specific products I used for this project:

Dupli-Color Shadow Chrome – Single Kit, Watch out they sell a double also with a photo of a single kit. And The Dupli-Color Prep Spray that I suggest for many painting projects where a clean surface is needed, oh right that’s all of them as prep is more important that anything, just ask my friends that own body shops.

The theory is simple, spray it with prep-spray, Then 3 coats of the Black/Shadow with 20min of dry time between coats and then 3 coats of clear with 20 min per coat, plus time to dray and your good to go. I of course thought more Black/Shadow was better as I was looking for less chrome and more black and I think I went one too many coats and really covered too much of the chrome, but in the end its blacked out and I am still trying to figure out if it is the look I want. I will soon be replacing the stock exhaust with a special Takegawa setup that allows this shield to still be used so now to figure out what cool decal or custom paint I can do to break up the black a bit. Time will tell. I do like how it turned out on the engine guard but that is slated for a nice Carbon Fiber piece in the near future. Many of the items I do on the site are going to be experiments and not all will work out or be kept for the final project, that said we are learning together. We all have different budgets, time and care about adding or changing our bikes, and that is what makes them so much fun in the end.
